ERB “Post-50 Internship Programme”
Embark on a New Chapter through Internships
The Employees Retraining Board (ERB) collaborates with the Labour Department’s “Work Trial Scheme” to co-organise the “Post-50 Internship Programme” (the “Programme”) again this year, providing internship opportunities for the “Post-50” (people aged 50 or above) to gain a better understanding of market trends and acquire necessary skills and mindset for entering the workplace, while encouraging employers to engage and recruit the “Post-50”. The Programme will be open for applications from 23 September 2024 with internship arrangements subject to relevant quotas.
This year, around 40 organisations from about 20 industries join the Programme, covering sectors such as public utilities, social services, information and communications technology, business services, property management, etc. Around 100 full-time and part-time internship vacancies are available, including roles such as concierge assistant, care assistant, social service project assistant, executive assistant and human resources assistant, etc. The one-month internship will be arranged during the period between November 2024 and January 2025. The internship allowance and bonus for individual full-time vacancy and part-time vacancy can reach up to $13,600 (based on a 30-day full-time internship period) and $10,000 (based on a 4-week part-time internship period) respectively, subject to the actual working hours involved.
Under the Programme, “Preparatory Workshop” and “Computer Applications Workshops” will be offered, featuring elements including communication skills, problem solving skills and workplace culture, as well as applications of generative AI and office software applications, etc., with a view to supporting the interns to get prepared for the workplace. Participating industry organisations will arrange mentors to provide on-the-job guidance and training for the interns and upon the completion of internships, interns with outstanding performance will be considered for employment opportunities subject to the operational needs and decisions of the organisations. To further support the training and employment needs of the “Post-50”, ERB also collaborates with different industry partners to organise “Work Experience Days”, facilitating the “Post-50” to learn about different industries and related skills training through company visits, thereby enhancing their confidence in re-entering the employment market.
ERB has been organising the Programme since 2019, and consistently gained support from industry organisations and active participation of the “Post-50”. Ellen Kwok, who joined the Programme last year, is now employed by Link-Pro CPA Limited as an Executive Assistant, assisting with auditing-related clerical work. Having previously worked in the fields of shipping and accounting, Ellen withdrew from the workforce in 2015. Through the Programme, she has been able to get back to the workplace, learn new knowledge and contribute her past experience to serve the community. According to Zorro Li, Audit Manager of Link-Pro CPA Limited, the company has been participating in the Programme for years and fully recognises the contributions of the “Post-50” who possess valuable workplace skills and are committed to their work.
Another participating employer, the Urban Group also actively supports the Programme. Mr Joey Li, Group Manager – Human Capital & Training of Urban Group, expressed that they are pleased to provide internships and employment opportunities for the “Post-50” as the Programme is beneficial to employers, employees and the society at large, allowing the “Post-50” to make good use of their valuable experience and strengths and embark on a new chapter in the workplace.
